CHAPTER 1

Alex Cole was sitting in a rental Cherokee Jeep outside Newingland Primary School. There were some parents standing around the gates in the harsh autumnal winds, collars up, faces braced, waiting for the little munchkin release that occurred at two-thirty daily. Alex looked at the photo he’d busted out of the frame on top of the mantel piece of Jason Jones’s living room.

Jason was his client.

Alex watched the commotion on the playground inside the fencing. A couple of teachers came out of the building followed by a line of brats. There was sudden screaming and waving as kids saw parents. You could see the looks in the parents eyes die, as they saw their freedom coming to an abrupt end. The teachers shouted, trying to keep the little fuckers in check. Alex looked for little Rush Jones. What kind of name was Rush Jones, anyway? He squinted over the heads of the parents to the line. Maybe he needed to get his eyes checked because it all looked like a fucking blur. Waiting until the commotion had reached the gates, Alex checked the mirrors before getting out the vehicle and crossing over. He had no desire to spend time with the doting dead-eyed families of these children. He stood at the back of the group. A couple of people gave him a glance, but looked away again without recognition. He guessed that newbies weren’t found in the line very often.

That didn’t make his life any easier.

Little bags of snot covered buggers were released one at a time, and ragged looking parents suddenly switched persona to Hey’s and How was your day’s, before dragging the little ones off, not really listening to the answers.

As Alex got close to the gate, he made sure to familiarize himself with Rush—stood in the playground—and stuffed the picture back in his pocket. When he was stood facing the woman on the gate he smiled as warmly as he could. “Hi.” he pushed his hands into his pocket, in anticipation of the first question. “My name’s Logan Jones, I’m here to pick up my nephew, Rush.”

The woman frowned and looked at her clipboard. All being well, he should have been added as a responsible person with the ability to pick up the little shit. He’d called ahead a couple of days ago pretending to be Jason Jones, and wanting to add his brother, Logan, who was visiting the family and wouldn’t it be nice if he could meet him from school, as a surprise? They’d gone for it hook, line, and sinker, and hopefully, he would be allowed to take charge of the kid.

“Can I see some ID?” the woman asked.

Alex pulled a wallet from his pocket and opened it, pulling out the fake driver’s license he’d knocked up in the office last week. The same one he’d used to rent the Cherokee. He handed it to the woman. It wasn’t great, as far as fake ID’s went, but this woman had probably never seen a fake in her life and wouldn’t have a clue.
